Westbury High School Photo Club students, under the guidance of art teacher Joshua Schimsky, photographed pharmaceutical samples as a subject matter. A unique and innovative program, Journey Forward Art Project both encourages students creativity and brings PL Developments closer to the community it is in.
According to Schimsky. "Students learned to explore and visualize product in new and unique ways. They were challenged to see past the idea that they were working with simple pills and pill bottles. In arranging and shooting pictures of PL Developments products, students explored how these simple looking products could be used to send a message or create a story. Students also developed an understanding of color and color theory by combining pills and bottles within their compositions. This was an interesting and enjoyable project for the students of Westbury High School's Photo Club."

(PRWEB) August 28, 2006 -- PL Developments announces their Journey Forward Art Project as they move headquarters to a state of the art pharmaceutical facility in Westbury, NY. Inspired by a George Lois quote, “Creativity can solve almost any problem, the creative act, the defeat of habit by originality, overcomes everything,” PL Developments has taken this opportunity to open up minds in an unusual manner and successfully mesh this creative project with their pharmaceutical business. The Journey Forward Art Project is an initiative by PL Developments to outsource artwork for an internal art gallery, exhibit the work of a broad range of artists within the community and make donations on the artists’ behalf to the charity of their choice.
During Phase One of the project, PL Developments invited university and high school students to participate in the unique and innovative program. “Asking students and artists to enhance PL Developments environment with their art work, the program encourages the passion for individuality in the artists and in ourselves,” according to Linda Singer, VP of Creative Services. “Using our pharmaceuticals as their subject matter, the students have used their talents and imaginations for Journey Forward.” The photographs are exhibited throughout the facility.
During Phase Two of the project, PL Developments extended the invitation to a broader art community. Artists were encouraged to loan their work to PLD for exhibition in their facility, becoming part of an ever-changing collection of emerging contemporary artists.
In addition, PL Developments offered to donate money to any charity of the artists’ choice within their Charity Donation Program. Through pharmaceutical sales, PLD and their customers have made donations to The American Breast Cancer Foundation and The Children’s Miracle Network. The successful Charity Donation Program ensured that the charities participating received a portion of proceeds earned through the sale of products bearing their logo. “It was more effective to tie the two programs together, and we decided a donation will be made to the charity of choice for every artist that participates in our Journey Forward Art Project,” according to Stephanie Witowski, Public Relations Associate.
As PLD continues Journey Forward, creativity is welcomed through their doors and minds. PL Developments exhibits photographs, paintings and drawings in their headquarters, and continues to add to the collection. During Phase Three of the Journey Forward Art Project, PL Developments hopes to extend to a broader art and design community. PLD welcomes visitors to the exhibit in their facility. The response has been overwhelming. “This truly has been a journey for us and the creativity we experience on a daily basis enhances our minds and our space,” said Ms. Witowski.

Retailers Can Offer a Healthy Dose
Categories within the private label over-the-counter (OTC) segment have had an up and down year. Private label analgesic rubs, cold/allergy/sinus tablet and liquids, cough drops, incontinence, sleeping remedies, nasal products enjoyed increased sales, while internal analgesics, cough syrups, gastrointestinal liquids and gastrointestinal tablets saw sales dip into the red.
With the improved image of private label products in recent years, retailers are ready to position their brands to provide leadership roles, according to Joni Foley, sales and marketing director, PL Developments, Farmingdale, N.Y. “Store brands have evolved from less expensive versions of name-brand items to premium products with a premium look over the national brand offering,” she says. “For consumers, this has created quite a dramatic shift in perception.”
There are several areas ripe with opportunity for private label OTC manufacturers, the biggest of which has come with the shifting population demographic. “Baby boomers and an increasing number of diabetics are looking for sugar-free products, and there’s also a need for new pain relieving products that have no side effects like the COX2 inhibitors,” says Vinima Kerof, vice president of marketing, Guardian Drug, Dayton, N.J.
“Rx-to-OTC switches are another area of opportunity. Products like Prilosec offer an opportunity that opens itself to growth, even though that particular product isn’t yet converted to private label.” she says.
Successful private label OTC suppliers are able to mirror national brands with timely, efficacious generic equivalents, but sometimes that’s more easily said than done in an industry that relies on science, technology and strict FDA regulations. “In the analgesic category, the liquid gel or softgel form has been very well received. Advil launched their 200-mg ibuprofen in this form and it is doing extremely well at retail, with many retailers it is the leading-selling SKU,” says Lenny Luongo, vice president private label sales and marketing, Pharmaceutical Formulations Inc. (PFI), Edison, N.J. “This is a unique form and for the most part, needs to be purchased from a liquid gel manufacturer. What makes the Advil liquid gel even more unique is that it’s an Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for private label companies, which requires an FDA submission and approval.”
Spearheading Innovation
Consumers are increasingly open to new private label products in this category, as long as they provide innovative incentives equal to or better than their national brand shelf mates. Such incentives would be “superior packaging, new dosage delivery forms and first-ever stand-alone alternatives that are merchandised exclusively to the store brand market,” Foley says.
Other private label OTC growth opportunities lie in innovation. “In order to bring your brand to the next level and, at the same time, increase loyalty and prestige to your brand, invent within it. Take chances. Offer products that are one step above their national brand counterparts,” suggests Foley. “This should include new innovative dosage forms of the national brand or products that quite simply stand alone as winning additions to your brand.”
For example, leading national brand laxative Senokot has been offered in private label in tableted form. After thorough analysis of a new line extension in this category, last year PL Developments launched a stand-alone private label Senna Softgel for the laxative category, which carried a “compare to the active ingredient of Senokot ” statement, but was formulated in an easy-to-swallow softgel dosage form; something the company believed consumers preferred. “Store brands drive both customer loyalty and profit – the way to grow private label programs is to invent within them and offer bigger, better and brighter than the national brand at every opportunity,” Foley says. There has also been innovation in acetaminophen products recently, with private label offerings set to compare with the national brand Tylenol lineup.
“Finally, acetaminophen customers have the same option of liquid-filled fast relief that has been tremendously successful in the ibuprofen (Advil) category,” Foley says. She adds that while the drug chains were quick to accept the liquid-filled technology in private label, food and mass merchandisers are now coming around and “jumping on the bandwagon,” she says. “This proves beyond a doubt that the trend is real – and growing.”
Methods to increase sales can take many forms. PFI has been concentrating on getting private label products positioned at check-out counters to take advantage of the impulse purchase. Luongo says Dollar General is currently enjoying success with a wire basket display program that features a 30-count ibuprofen tablet offering.
Guardian Drug’s Kerof says smaller packs are another area for consideration. “Not only do they satisfy the issue of affordability, but they also drive trial,” she says.
Another option is value packs that offer promotional items such as an additional percentage of product or a buy-one-get-one-free concept. “Customers like the idea of getting something above and beyond what they’re paying for,” Kerof adds.
When it comes to promoting private label OTC products, it’s important to consider the factors that attract a consumer’s attention. First and foremost, it’s key to consider packaging that’s at least comparable to the quality of your national brand competitors. Quality packaging is a primary vehicle that conveys the safety and value of the product within – two notions that a consumer looks for when trying to decide between paying a little extra for a national brand or enjoying the value that comes with a private label equivalent.
“The very best promotion, on or off shelf, starts earlier in the process – actual package design. Presentation is an integral part of the store brands’ identity and success,” Foley says. “Your ‘look’ is the first link to the customers’ attention. Target your customer and talk to them through your design. Keep your packaging fresh, updated, consistent and exciting always.”
Erosive Auctions
Submitting bid proposals to secure a private label OTC manufacturing contract has entered the technology age – an unfortunate development, according to many manufacturers, who see online bid auctions as detrimental to retailers and ultimately the consumers they sell to.
“They are seriously deterrent to growth in this category,” says Kerof. “In the last two years, manufacturers have become desperate to retain business and in doing so, they significantly lower their margins. Retailers love it because they’re getting a lower price point, but the process leaves very little room for a company to invest in its growth and product diversity.”
The most important consideration, especially in the pharmaceutical market, is the level of quality and its impact on the consumer. “If you put a product on the shelf that’s not comparable to national brands, the customer may not be satisfied with it. You have to remember there are a lot of choices out there and customers know they can get their OTC products in other venues,” warns Kerof.
In the end, it’s important for retailers to realize their full potential when it comes to investing in a private label OTC product offering. Foley advises retailers to remember that their brand is a trust-building reflection of their commitment to their consumers. “Retailers are ever-changing and improving market leaders are offering their customers, at every opportunity, the premium products and innovative choices they depend upon.” PLB

As consumers world-wide become more and more environmentally savvy, “green” has become the way to go in business. Many of our customers have seen the positive impacts of going green; for the well-being of our planet, the industry, as well as business. Their initiatives, in response to consumers’ demand for more environmentally-friendly practices, affect their expectations of us, and have given PLD one more reason to take on the responsibility of protecting our environment.
I am pleased to say that PL Developments is actively pursuing efforts to build and maintain sustainable practices throughout our processes and procedures company-wide. This initiative applies to resources, energy, and business partnerships. We are aggressively enlisting the support of sustainable-practice organizations and environmentally-conscious companies that can lend us their experience and expertise in this endeavor. We have already implemented new practices that will lead us in the ‘green’ direction.
The Sales Group has started pushing our customers to choose ‘greener’ options for their items. Our quotes include a “green” alternative, and the environmental implications of that choice. About one-third of American garbage consists of packaging material, which is thrown out immediately, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. In a joint effort with Creative Services, the Sales Group has streamlined packaging options for many items and displays, eliminating excess material and production time. Customers, including Sam’s Club, have already accepted these greener alternatives.
The warehouse and factory have also become an integral part of PLD’s ‘green’ efforts by recycling ink cartridges and corrugated materials. Creative Services and Purchasing/Planning have begun sourcing suppliers that use recycled materials and environmentally-efficient processes. Additionally, Quality Assurance, Production, and our building technicians will be working with our power supplier to determine cost-effective and sustainable sources and methods of energy for our facility.
We still have a long way to go. Over the next year, we will be pursuing certification with the U.S. Green Building Council, which recognizes buildings that positively impact our natural environment and economy. The U.S. Green Building Council is an internationally recognized community of leaders working to transform the way commercial construction affects the environment. Certification with this organization will give us the recognition and credibility we need to satisfy our customers and fuel our efforts. Ideally, certification will further encourage other customers to reckon with the environmental challenges that face us all our responsibility to our environment.
The internal response to help out with the ‘green’ project has already been substantial, but everyone’s input is necessary. If you would like to be a part of this project, please email or call me with ideas and suggestions. The NYSDEC also recommends some things you can do to contribute to PLD’s efforts during your workday:
• Print double-sided.
• Don’t print emails unnecessarily.
• Use electronic files instead of paper copies as often as possible.
• Turn lights off when rooms are not in use.
• Unplug your phone chargers and other gadgets that usually remain plugged in overnight.
• Don’t waste paper products; tissues, toilet paper, paper towels, etc.
• Use dishes and utensils in the kitchen, instead of paper.
• Pack lunch in reusable containers.
• Purchase organic foods from local markets.
• Be sure to use non toxic or recycled office supplies.
• Purchase office supplies from businesses with the environment in mind.
• If you cannot carpool or use mass transit to get to work, keep your car in top condition with regular maintenance, for fuel efficiency.

PL Developments Journey Forward Art Project inspires creativity within and outside our doors. Inviting students and artists to enhance our environment with their art work, our project encourages the passion for individuality in the artists and in ourselves.
We invited university and high school students to participate in our project. Using our pharmaceuticals as their subject matter, the students have used their talents and imaginations to Journey Forward. We have extended the invitation to the art community, asking artists to loan PL Developments art work for exhibit in our facility and become part of an on-going, changing collection of emerging contemporary artists.
A donation will be made to various charities in honor of every artist that participates in our Journey Forward Art Project.
